The Jersey Shore in Black and White from Sandy Hook to Fortescue Part 1

This is part one of a two part blog and photo gallery covering my travels along the New Jersey Shore from March 2020 to September 2021 capturing images from some of my favorite shore towns on film. I did not visit each destination in any particular order but I will start the blog at Sandy Hook, the northern most tip of the Jersey shore and make my way down to and round the Atlantic side of Cape May and then up the Delaware bay side to the fishing village of Fortesque .

Over the years I have visited and photographed quite a few towns and places at the New Jersey Shore, but during this period of time my goal was to create a collection of images captured using only black and white film. These destinations included Sandy Hook and the Highlands, Seaside Heights, Long Beach Island, Atlantic City and neighboring areas, as well as Ocean City, Cape May, the Eastpoint Lighthouse and Fortesque.

With so many interesting buildings and structures to photograph Sandy Hook and Fort Hancock is always a must return on my list of photo destinations. - This image was  taken using my Pentax K1000 with Fomapan 200 film.

As mentioned above, part one starts at Fort Hancock in Sandy Hook. I have made many trips here in the past but the last couple of visits I concentrated mainly on the Fort area. There are so many interesting building and structures that are either in repair or disrepair which make excellent subject matter. My next trip back will include the lighthouse which I have captured digitally in the past but not yet on film. The cameras I used on this particular group of photos were the Pentax ME Super and K1000 accompanied by four different focal length lenses including the Pentax 28, 35, 50 and 135mm lenses. The film I used for theses shoots included Fomapan 100 Classic, Fomapan 200 Creative and Kentmere 100.

My next stop down the coast would be the Seaside Heights Boardwalk. With a previous visit to the Atlantic City and Ocean City Boardwalks this Summer I felt Seaside would be a great choice for my next boardwalk destination. Jammed packed during the summer vacation months this group of photos had been captured on a beautiful Autumn afternoon just a few weeks after Labor Day when things start to quiet down substantially. I love to photograph various shore destination after the crowded hectic Summer season winds down. The photos taken in this part of the accompanying gallery were done using a Pentax MX and ME Super loaded with Fomapan 100 and 200 speed film using either a 50 or 28mm focal length lens.

The two photos above were taken on Long Beach Island - top photo was captured in Ship Bottom at the LBI FLY Kite Festival on Ilford FP4 film and the bottom shot a misty morning at Barnegate Light on Ilford HP5.

On to Long Beach Island ( aka LBI ). South of Seaside Heights we come to Long Beach Island with its many popular seaside towns such as Beach Haven, Ship Bottom, Surf City, Harvey Cedars and Barnegate Light. The two stops made here were Ship Bottom for their annual LBI FLY International Kite Festival and Barnegate Light State Park. Sitting at the north end of LBI on the Barnegate Inlet, the state park always offers something to see or do. Whether one enjoys fishing, strolling along the walking path, watching the boat traffic or climbing to the top of probably the most photographed lighthouse in New Jersey, it's always an enjoyable stop. The images in this section of the gallery were taken mostly with a Pentax ME Super and K1000 on Iford HP and FP4 film using  28mm, 50mm and 135mm focal length lenses.
